Photography on Ellsworth Drive!

By wayan on July 4th, 2007

Today we celebrated a declaration of photographic freedom in Downtown Silver Spring.

A horde of photographers swarmed down Ellsworth Drive, exercising their First Amendment rights including freedom of assembly, petition, and speech.

The photographers demanded that the developers of Downtown Silver Spring welcome photography, videography, and other filming on Ellsworth Drive should be welcomed and protected, consistent with First Amendment rights as they would apply on any other public street.

On this day, July 4th, we did Free Our Streets from restrictions. We did show that our rights cannot be leased to PFA Silver Spring, LC, for $1 a year.

Now the question is, what will happen on July 5th?

I had a great time at the walk but was saddened to see the chalk art erased so quickly. I’m using my picture of the erasure as my entry for the photo contest.

I was there and thought it was a terrific turnout - though the abscence of all local politicians except Jamie Raskin was quite noticeable. They were all at the TP Holiday parade which I walked just an hour before - so why couldn;t they stop by and make this more important event? I think their no-show speaks volumes.
BTW where do we post our shots too? I did not catch the details from the megaphone announcements.

It was a great turn out, and I was proud to see so many folks take time to stand up on this issue. Great to see Raskin there and the ACLU, with some media coverage as well. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but today we stood up for freedom and our rights. Thanks to Chip and Wayan and all others who brought light on this matter. If you shot photos at the event and can post on Flickr, be sure and tag the images with DTSS Photowalk, or at least DTSS, so folks can find the images in a search.

Likewise: thanks to all the organizers! A great July 4!

Here’s a story in today’s Hartford Examiner:

They actually had a worker with bucket and mop wipe away the chalk. Still, the walk was peaceful and an important statement, regardless of an alleged “photo contest.” Thank you!
